I often saw the massive line ups at Messini. Finally tried it and truthfully I wasn't very impressed. Not sure if I was there on an off night or what. Looking forward to trying Maras.

re: Baelsette
I tried the chicken gyros at Maras today. It's ok. Less greasy, less salty, less seasoned (with other herbs and spices) and less hacked up than Messini's. They include fries in the pita, like Messini and Folia. They are light-handed w the tzatsiki.
I haven't ordered the chicken gyro at Folia lately, so not sure how it compares.
I realized today that I'd much rather stick w pork or chicken souvlaki in a pita when in Greektown, and order shawarma in other parts of the city, when I'm craving a gyro/shawarma-type pita sandwich.

re: prima
I've been to Messini a couple times and think the gyros can be good or really good depending on what critter you're eating.
Both flavours at Folia are excellent IMHO.
I do not care for the fries in them though.
As for your chopped up meat in a pita strategy I think it's pretty solid.

re: Davwud
Agree that Messini's gyro really varies depending on the critter, although in my experience, sometimes their gyros have been too salty/greasy yet lacking herbs/spices, sometimes their gyros are pretty good, sometimes their gyros are very good.
I've tried Messini's chicken, lamb and pork gyro-meat over the past 8 or 9 years, and I never seem to know exactly how salty, seasoned, greasy and/or hacked up my chosen gyro-meat is going to be. I didn't love my last pork-gyro-on-a-platter experience at Messini, but I'd probably still take Messini's gyros over Maras' gyros.
The Greek fries are better at Messini and at Folia than at Maras. Maras' pre-frozen shoestring-type Greek fries needed some vinegar and oregano.
