Boar's Nest in Ballard
Just wanted to throw some love out to place that I've been really digging lately. I didn't love them when they first opened, but gave them a second chance a little while ago, and I feel like they've really been knocking it out of the park the past couple of months (which should speak both to the challenge of producing consistently good BBQ on a daily basis, and how terrible it is when people swear off of a place after one visit)
They do pretty good BBQ, nothing out of this world, but by PNW standards puts them on a short list of solid places in the area (Gabriel's Fire, Rainin Ribs, Bitterroot, Jones, sometimes). The brisket's solid, the pulled pork is good, and the ribs are above average, and I'll humbly state that I have very high standards for my Q. The cornbread and sides are very good, as well.
My favorite thing on the menu though is their Fried Chicken sandwich. They do up a flattened chicken breast with a cornmeal crust and put it on a cheap little hamburger bun with a couple slices of pickles, in the Chick-Fil-A style. The juicy (especially for white meat) chicken breast was a massive piece of meat (my buddy joked that they could have used 2 buns), which allowed me to cut off pieces that exceed the bun and dip them in the Boar's Nest's house made sauces.
I dare say it fits into my Top 5 favorite sandwiches in the city right now and may be challenging my beloved White Center Crawfish Grill poboy for the top spot.
