Tokyo Part 3 - Mount Baumkuchen, Fu'unji, Mizutani, Nambara-Tei, Sapporaya, Imahan
This is the final installment for Tokyo. No pics for these, though:
Mount Baumkuchen - Tokyo certainly appears to share our love for baumkuchen, judging from how ubiquitous it is here. Our favorite was the "crispy" baumkuchen from the Mount Baumkuchen on Chuo-Dori in Ginza.
Fu'unji in Shinjuku - Tsukemen with fishy, starchy dipping sauce. Unfortunately we hit during lunch hour and waited over one hour. Was very tasty, but noodles could have been a drop firmer. Good cheap lunch choice if you're in the area, but probably wouldn't make a separate trip for it.
Mizutani - Excellent sushi. However, we were spoiled by our meal at Sawada which we thought was better. Mizutani's rice is a little softer and his fish is more subtly seasoned. Served us a bowl of ikura which was sensational (maybe that sounds strange, but the ikura was so much better than what we get in New York...) Tamago was more dense and "wetter" than at Sawada. Mizutani is a little reserved but he was nice to us. Recommended, but only if you can't get a reservation at Sawada!
Nambara-tei (Tsukiji) - This one was recommended to us by two nice ladies who work at one of the nicer kitchenware stalls in the outer market. Tiny stall in the same aisle that serves oyako-don. Light, fluffy egg and lightly cooked chicken over rice, served with pickles, soup and tea. We got the "seared" variety. Excellent cheap lunch. The older couple that runs this place is lovely. I don't think they speak any English.
Sapporaya - Wandering around Nihonbashi, we decided to try some cold ramen at this place, which is recommended in Yukari's book. Great to have cold ramen on a hot day. Comes with a nice sesame sauce, but the toppings were not great. Pretty tasty, but not worth going out of the way for.
Imahan (Ningyocho) - Tasty beef. Decor and atmosphere nothing special. Next time I would go for lunch, not dinner.
