Are you looking for sushi? If not, have you considered Yakitori Tori Shin?

Actually Shabu Shabu 70 on east 70th has pretty decent sushi. Chirashi is pretty good. And, it is reasonably priced. Has been there forever with a very loyal following.

Everyone answers w sushi recs-Japanese food is so much more than just sushi-or is that what you meant? A good option is Tokubei-on 86th betwen 2nd and 1st. You have a menu full of option including sushi and traditional Japanese fare.

If you want the best of the best you will pay for that. Sushi Gari and Sushi Seki are the only two places I would eat up there. Maybe the sushi Nazi , Sasabune ( but his rice is too hot and falls apart, although the fish is fresh)

Eat there at lunch instead of dinner?

The price is dear, but worth it. Miso shoyu ramen w/ butter to help recover costs...
