Hip bar near Times Square

Motosport Sep 11, 2012 02:22 PM

Friends from London are staying @ the Westin in Times Square. We'd like to meet them for a drink at a quiet but "Hip" bar about 8 PM where we can talk and they will go ooooh and ahhh!!
We'd like a place close to Times Square but not necessarily in Times Square.
We won't be spending a long time @ the bar.
We'll be heading to the Eastside for dinner and a walking tour of Manhattan if the weather permits.

    Jimmy's Corner
    140 West 44th Street (btw. B'way & Sixth)

not "hip" in a Disney/Brûlé way; hip as in "this is what Times Sq. used to be". One of the best jukeboxes in town, too.

In the context of the "hip bar" OP question, Hilarious. Very funny.

I am a huge fan (from Montreal). Will be there this weekend! Love the place.

Salut, Matt; yeah, I correlate 'hip' with 'gritty', especially when it comes to Times Sq. -it looks like you and I are in the minority, though.
And, based on the 'hounds' recommends, I actually stopped in to Lantern's Keep last week. Wow! tiny & dark -like hanging out in a hall closet with the door closed. Maybe they're great mixologists there, but I can't see it as an "oooh & aaah" Manhattan-tourist place [ismahli, moto].

Well, given that this is Chowhound, I'm going to assume that you're more interested in drink quality than scene, in which case I'd take a look at Lantern's Keep. Haven't been yet myself, but have heard good things from friends whose experience and opinions on cocktails I really trust.

Obviously I can't vouch for the "hipness" of it, but it's worth checking out.

Lantern's Keep is an incredible cocktail bar, extremely small, make a reservation, but do go. It's so hip it doesn't even know it...

Second Lantern's Keep for your best bet at a quiet but "hip in its own right" way. The drinks are fantastic, and it is small and perfect for good conversation.
At 8pm, the Bar Downstairs down by Bryant Park (in the Andaz Hotel) is another option; it doesn't get hopping until later. Unfortunately, in and around Times Square, there aren't many options now that JBird has flown the coop to the UES.

The Lamb's Club. Amazing cocktails, highly styled
            decor, and conversation friendly.
