Perla vs. Rosemary's - birthday "hooky" lunch

Hello all!

My SO and I are playing hooky on his b-day and I am planning on taking him out for a nice celebratory lunch. I currently have a lunch reservation at Del Posto for 9/21, but in all honesty, it's not my #1 choice. I have been waiting for Salumeria Rosi to open up in the UES and it just feels as if this is never going to happen!

So far, Perla and Rosemary's seem to be the closest to what I am looking for... A more laid back setting, but still presenting an impressive meal. Only problem is, I haven't been to either, so my decision is that much tougher.

Has anyone been to either or both of these restaurants that can provide me with pros/cons for each? or if you have any other suggestions, please feel free to point out!

Thank you in advance!

  1. Have you considered doing Babbo instead?

    1. I went to lunch at Rosemary's mid-week and I thought it was really great. It was right after the NYT review came out and it lived up to my rather high expectations.
We had the eggplant caponata, zucchini crudo, warm olives, caprese foccacia, chopped salad (better and more interesting than the name suggests), and the minestra di stagione (vegetable soup)...standouts were the foccacia, salad, and zucchini crudo. I haven't been to Perla so I can't compare...

      1. Kathryn - I had considered Babbo, but he's actually been there before. I am hoping to take him somewhere he hasn't experienced yet.

        Thanks for the tips, Barcelonian.

        1. Also, bear in mind that Perla's lunch menu is considerably 'lighter' than the dinner menu: mostly sandwiches and pizzas; no major 'secondi'.
