old mexico restaurant

Did this restaurant close or did it relocate? Supposedly it was the first mexican eatery in Brooklyn.

    Old Mexico in Brooklyn Heights? That closed years ago. I remember a thread about it on this site, probably from a couple of years ago, so you might do a search of the archives. Only the old timers remember this one!

        I started that thread. Old Mexico was the first Mexican Restaurant I ate at back in the early 60s. I was very impressed back then, today, who knows? I do remember that it was very spicy which I liked.

          When I went in the '90s, the food was unremarkable. Kind of bland to my recollection. Seemed to have miss-placed their spice rack. Had no idea it had been there that long prior to your post. Must have done something right to be in business 30+ years. Too bad they couldn't keep it up. Not a lot of choices for Mex in BH these days.

            The interesting thing (in my opinion at least) about Old Mexico was that it was family owned by a family that lived in the neighborhood (on Orange, Pineapple or Cranberry... I get my fruits mixed up). The oldest generation were the original cooks and I really liked the place, even though they would allow no substitutions for anything... you ate what they put on the menu, period. When the grandparents aged out of the kitchen, they'd sit around and watch their daughter and son in law do the work. They worked hard in both the restaurant and in the wholesale business upstairs, where they made fresh corn chips, tortillas (flour and corn) and green salsa for distribution to many Manhattan restaurants. In the early '80s, many of us would go upstairs and buy large paper bags of the warm from the oven (or whatever that machine was called) chips for $1, as well as salsa in whatever containers they had around. Great stuff. By the end of the '80s, the "kids", now high school age, started working in the restaurant and the parents tried to lay back a little. The place was not getting much business (they didnt care much for the changing neighborhood with all the youngsters moving into the new co-op'ed brownstones and they showed it with some attitude that was written up here and elsewhere) and it went pretty far downhill, eventually closing. I think they sold their place and retired out of NYC. Enough?
