Bertrand's at Mr. A's has a credit card hold to book a reservation on line [moved from San Diego]

If you want to book through Open Table they require a credit card to hold the reservation. They charge $25 a person if you do not show up or cancel within the required amount of time.

Here is the blurb from the Open Table site:
Bertrand at Mister A's requests a credit card number to hold this reservation. Cancellations not received before the morning of the reservation are subject to a charge of $25/person. For cancellations within 24 hours of the reservation, please call the restaurant directly.
For cancellations within 48 hours of the reservation, please call the restaurant directly. This reservation is subject to the restaurant's cancellation policy.

You will be able to cancel this reservation online up until 5:00 pm two days before the reservation, but you may still be subject to cancellation fees, depending on the restaurant's policy. Please contact the restaurant with any questions regarding cancellation fees.

This is the first time I've run into this on Open Table.

Credit card requirement is commonplace in my experience at high end places. And cancellation charges.

The most "interesting" requirement I've come across was the place that required an upfront payment, through PayPal, at the time of making the reservation.

Wow! Payment upfront? No thank you!

I called Bertrand at Mister A's and was able to make a reservation by phone and I wasn't asked for a credit card hold.

Small Michelin 2* place - wonderful food. Absolutely not a problem to make the payment if that was what it was going to take to get a table.

I read that 10 percent of restaurants nationwide now require credit card deposits on OpenTable. 15 percent of restaurants in New York do. It's to cut down on no-shows.
