Yummy cupcakes/dessert...

For the 3rd year in a row, I'm tagging along with my hubby while he's on a business trip in Toronto. This year, we're heading up a few days early and will be there on his birthday. I'd like to find a place within the downtown area to pick him up a surprise dessert. And he's a cupcake fanatic. Any ideas???

I'm still kicking myself that I didn't make it out to the Wedding Cake Shoppe. It just turned out to be too far given the schedule we had. I settled for Prairie Girl given how close they were to where we were staying. They were decent but nothing special. The person who helped me was super nice though...just like everyone else in Toronto. :)

Add my vote for the Wedding Cake Shoppe. I purchased a dozen a few months ago (and ate most of them myself) and they were all exceptional.

So after reading all of these...the Wedding Cake Shoppe it is! I'll sneak the car one morning...it really sounds like it's worth the extra drive. Any flavor suggestions?

Passionfruit, vanilla vanilla and peanut butter and chocolate are my 3 favorites. All of the cupcakes are either basic vanilla cake or chocolate cake (with the occasional exception) with different frostings. Chocolate truffle is good for the chocolate lover -- chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache frosting. But all of her flavours are good!

I agree that the vanilla is really yummy! Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of trying the peanut butter and chocolate, because that sounds divine! But one that you didn't mention, which in my opinion is incomparable, is the oreo.

My favourites are the vanilla and the chai (w/vanilla cake). Can't say I haven't enjoyed all the flavours I've sampled though (and I think I've tried just about every flavour w/vanilla cake)

The Wedding Cake Shoppe has my favourite cupcakes in the city. Really head and shoulders above most, if not all, the others. High quality cake and excellent European-style buttercreams (the super creamy, not super sugary kind).

Another +1 for WCS!

If you like the grittier/sugar kind of frosting, I like Prairie Gilrl Bakery on the East End. Their mini's have the best ratio of frosting to cake. Their full-sized ones are too icing heavy.

Personally, Prairie Girl doesn't compare to WCS. I find Prairie Girl cake is bland with too much icing that's also too sweet...YMMV

Does he have flavour preferences? What kind of frosting? American or European buttercream preference? Whereabouts will you be staying/spending your time?

We'll be staying downtown at the Intercontinental so prefer something in the downtown area. He's a European buttercream fan. Chocolate is a must!!! :)

If though you're making your choice based solely on your desire for cupcakes, and it's between the Wedding Cake Shoppe and Bobbette and Belle, I think WCS has superior cupcakes. However, I know others might take umbrage with that statement.

I've never had the two in a blind taste test. Had plans for that, but on the scheduled day WCS was mysteriously closed... B & B is in my neck of the woods, and I am ever so grateful. I do love both, however, and feel confident neither would disappoint.

I pretty much did do a taste test. I bought the same flavoured cupcakes from both places, 1 week apart. And WCS won hands down.

A friend and I planned to do that, only on the same day. Not sure what our preferences will be, but maybe we could start collecting data, hahaha.
