Old Shanghai closed - where did the chef go? [San Francisco]
The Old Shanghai restaurant on Geary closed this past July. Does anybody know if their dinner chef surfaced anywhere locally? I had one of the best meals of my life - it was centered on a superb deep fried fish with a spicy brown sauce - not overcooked, not syrupy, clear flavors, very fresh fish. Hungry now...
They're open again, and according to Y*lp, have been for some time. I don't know if it's the same chef.
I would certainly try other things on their menu, but I didn't think much of their pasty-textured sheng jian bao, wu xi spare ribs, or overcooked preserved vegetable and fava bean dishes. Their Shanghai style noodles were pretty good and contained a decent amount of leafy greens.
I couldn't understand them, and the servers couldn't translate them for me, but there are a few specials listed on the wall.
