Hooked fish tacos at the Withrow farmers market

I went to the Withrow farmers market yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to see a Hooked booth serving up fish tacos. For $4 you got a flat-grill fried white perch filet (lightly breaded) in a soft taco, with shredded cabbage, crema (Mexican style creme fraiche), and a green salsa. The fish was perfectly cooked with a crispy exterior and the cabbage had a tangy dressing with coriander. I thought it was great and will certainly get another.

They also do this on Sundays at the Leslieville market

...and on Tuesdays at the AppleTree market (Mount Pleasant and Davisville).

I believe the hours are 3-7. It's in the park that runs on the north side of Davisville, a block west of Mount Pleasant. Very sweet market, lots of gorgeous produce, some great jerk chicken and grilled haloumi skewers from LOIC and usually a food truck or two to boot.

I agree that it's a nice market, pp. I buy my naturally raised ground beef there. Also some great sheeps' milk and goats' milk cheeses. The only food truck that I've seen is a cupcake truck.

Who does the NRGB?? I get mine in Aurora from Howard's Farms and it's amazing.

And yes, Yongeman, I've only ever seen the cupcake truck as well - I'm not there every week, though, so not sure if there have been others. For a relatively small market, they pack in a great selection of vendors. The only great corn I've had this season was from one of the organic farmers.

So...no fish tacos from Hooked at AppleTree today. BUT they did have these tasty fish burgers - a patty made from ground salmon, sable and halibut (I think?), grilled on the bbq and served on a bun with "dirty mayo" and a nice slaw. I also picked up some corn from the older man who only sells about 3 different kinds of vegetables, no sign either, but wow, super delicious corn. And a loaf of multi-seed sourdough (organic, I think) from de la terre bakery in Vineland - I didn't know them before this market but I've been really enjoying their breads. Did any of you guys make it out to the market today?

Hi peppermint pate. I have bought that sourdough seed bread as well...it's delicious! I'm going to have to give the corn a try, too. I'm sorry that it's only once a week because in additon to the great vendors, it's a nice break from normal urban shopping.

There are two meat vendors at this Apple Tree Market, Davwud. I have usually bought from the man near the west side of the market. I've only bought ground beef from him ($4.50/lb) and of course it's frozen in 1 lb packages. I'll check on Tuesday for the name of the farm.

I tried to get one on Sunday but the lineup was at least 20 people long and not moving very quickly. One woman in a red shirt who got in line when I arrived was still in line after I visited the vendor and made my purchases! So at least 20-30 mins.

When we were there, probably around 11:30 AM there was basically no lineup at all.

I got there just before 1 p.m. I'll try to make it earlier next weekend but I'm just not a morning person. :-)
