cleveland: market garden brewery
market garden brewery
ohio city neighborhood
right next to the westside market
pretty crowded and 'hopping' both indoors and on the outdoor patio this past friday at noon.
we had a tap beer sampler and the brewmasters meat+cheese platter. this platter was fine for 3 people who were not hungry for real food to share while jibber jabbering. in fact its kind of what its for.
the wsm cheese selection was great, but the house meats varied. the green-chili sausage was very good, its not spicy and the chilis really do add flavor. the kielbasa was mild and ok, the jerky was not very good. i was a bit disappointed with it because i always get jerky in chinatown and love the stuff and while it looked good, it just wasnt.
the beers were all tasty. the refugee saison is a perfect rendition of this style. some like saison some dont, but i love it and this was a very good one. next was the smoked porter. i am also a porter style fan and this was a very good version. the smoked maltiness is strong, but at the right balance. another sample was forest city brown ale. an excellent rendition of this malty style. a 'real ale' britpub taste they would love over the pond. two others were the pearl street wheat and wahoo wit. both similar, pearl being more flavorful and wahoo having a nice dry finish. if forced to choose, not going to make me give up glbc holy moses, but good stuff. a final sample was the viking pale ale. challenging, with a sharp and dry hoppy bite. loved it prob the most of all, although the saison was up there too.
mgb is a must stop after a westside market visit. i think i read they are going to make spirits soon, if they havent already, so keep an eye out for that too.
you are quite welcome. the brewmaster is the guy who did the dogfishhead 60min ipas and the rest of their stuff until he moved back home to cleveland to open his own place. so he has quite a cult brewmaster pedigree.
and don't forget you have the belgian bier markt, abc tavern and of course great lakes brewing all right across the street. and more. the wsm area has turned into quite a monster craft brew neighborhood!
