Shanachie replacement

Has anyone heard what will be going into the spot where the Shanachie was in Ambler?

  1. Doc Magrogans.. same folks who own the oyster house in West Chester.

CW, Will they replicate their West Chester oyster house? Do you have any comments on the food served at the West Chester location? Thanks.

      1. re: Bacchus101

Its my understanding that all the Doc Magrogans have the same menu... though I have only been to the one in West Chester a few times... mostly for apps/oysters.. once for dinner. I put the chain food on par with Kildares the other chain this restaurant group owns.. a few decent dishes and a whole lot of misses, without great value, unless you go during happy hour. They recently opened a DM in University CIty, and they have others in lower PA, and one in Dover DE. The key with all these places is consistency or their inability to maintain it with a constant turnover in the kitchen... I expect this place to be no different.

If you want to see the menu look here. http://www.docmagrogans.com/menu/

And here is short piece of local news that confirmed the Docs rumor.

Thanks CW, perhaps the Blue Bell Inn will become the go to seafood spot when traveling to that general area of Montco. Based on all your observations and offerings I would most likely not make the drive to Ambler for Doc's. Thanks very much.

That deal supposedly fell through, here is a more recent update:

Thanks for the update. Missed that one. With any luck maybe Panera or Dunkin Donuts will move in there.

              1. re: cwdonald

I will NOT be happy of a DD or panera or any other major chain goes in that spot. Yuck! Keep main street looking unique please - one attracting local businesses! Sorry but I hope something good goes on that large space. Something that is attractive to families and locals.

                1. re: amysep

Agreed. It would be nice to see an independent , chef driven place there.

                  1. re: amysep

You said what I was thinking amy! My Uncle Joe who lives in Ambler was complaining about a lack of good breakfast places close to Ambler Manor and would also love a thai or vietnamese joint in town. He loves his pho and loves to add hot sauce and hot peppers to it.

                  2. re: cwdonald

I'd be pretty certain neither Dunkin' Donuts nor Panera would want that place. How do you run in for coffee or breakfast when you have to drive around for a parking space?

                    1. re: Jdbc

Parking really isn't a problem.. just go to the municipal lot two blocks away.. Frankly I wish some enterprising chef would come to bring some interesting cooking to the area. Brian Duffy was doing good things at Shanachie when it first opened (ironically he left to work for the group that owns DocM, Kildares and Harvest... ). Or pehaps Chickie and Petes could expand their empire....

                      1. re: Jdbc

Very true. Since the space is pretty large it would be cool if it was a dining and live music place. Maybe a kid friendly space for indoor play? Or maybe the space for the (hope to open) ambler food coop? Lots of great ideas that could be tossed around for best use of the space. I guess since its being sold fitted as a bar/restaurant it will probably stay as that.

                        1. re: amysep

We definitely need a place with both music and food , that was the beauty of the Shanachie! The space is definitely designed to accommodate that sort o venue. Maybe a German restaurant with an Oomppa band (no idea how to spell that), or a soul food and blues venue like Warmdaddy's was, a tapas restaurant with a stage for flamenco dancing.....

                          1. re: AmblerGirl

AG, Oompah or Umpapa are acceptable spellings but you were close enough to communicate your idea. Yes, a German restaurant with high quality brats, kraut and other favorites and of course German beers! Oktoberfest in Ambler!

                            1. re: AmblerGirl

+1 on a Bavarian Brauhaus. That space would be perfect for it!

                              1. re: PattiCakes

Dang! Now I'm gonna have to go to the Polish Festival this weekend at the shrine in chalfont. It is ten dollars a person to get in, not sure how much for parking but they have some mighty fine food and music.

            2. I just went past Shanachie and noticed the big For Sale banner is down. Has anybody heard anything - sold, new owners etc?

Hopefully, I am not spreading any rumors here, but I heard Roseys BBQ is moving to a "bigger and better' spot on Butler Avenue. that would be fantastic if it were the Shanachie location. Rosey's has been going a live blues and BBQ night for a while, the Shanachie location would be a perfect fit. Larger size, more visibility, music stage and a bar. I would never leave :)

I'll keep my fingers crossed AmblerGirl

                  1. re: AmblerGirl

That would be Fantastic! I will meet you at the bar!!

                    1. re: crazyspice

I really hope this is true. I worry a bit because moving a smoker, and setting up the ventilation is non trivial, and costly. What is interesting is I have noticed a difference in the quality of bbq between the two outposts of Rosey's, and I really prefer the Ambler location. Hope they do not do anything to ruin that.

                      1. re: cwdonald

I can see where moving the smoker would be a challenge - but that current Rosey's location is too small! I was under the impression that they smoked the meats in Jenkintown and delivered them to Ambler. I'm not sure why we thought that.

                        1. re: jujuthomas

that is correct.......none of the meats were cooked in ambler.

                          1. re: sweenz7

Do you think that might change with the new bigger restaurant?

                            1. re: cwdonald

I would hope so.......I would think the fresher, the better.

                      http://ambler.patch.com/articles/rose...

Rosey's IS moving... the article does not say where to exactly, but it will be on Butler.

                      1. re: jujuthomas

The other shoe dropped... Rosey's in Jenkintown is closed having been sold. So looks like if Roseys is opening in Ambler they will have to have their own smoker assuming its even a bbq restaurant.

                  2. Rosey's rumors were close, it's going to be a new concept from former Rosey's owner Chad Rosenthal.

"Rosenthal is mum on name and exact concept, but says it will "have soul and a funky, hip vibe, combined with a live music venue.""

interesting... they've closed both Rosey's locations now, correct?

                      1. re: jujuthomas

Yes the original Roseys locatoin was sold to another BBQ place.

                    2. I'm going to be in Ambler this weekend for lunch and a movie. Is this place open yet?

Nope not yet. Your best bet is probably Deterra which has brunch Sat 11-2 and Sunday 10;30-2;30. Forest and Main does not open until 4pm, and the kitchen not until 5, which would only work if you were eating after a matinee.

Trax cafe, at the train station, From the Boot, and Saffron are also all open... and if you want an old school sandwich and thick shake there is always Costa's at the corner of Butler and Bethlehem Pikes.

I am sure Amblergirl can give you great recommendations.

                        1. re: cwdonald

                          Thanks cwd.

Wonder what the hold up is on the BBQ spot.

                          1. re: gaffk

I am not sure what might be delaying the project but the facebook page for the restaurant (The Lucky Well) says they should open in six weeks... My guess that means more likely by Labor Day unless they do a soft opening. They are currently advertising for staff.

The owner Chad Rosenthal is currently on Next Food Network Star so his participation in that show might have slowed the project down.
