Lobsters in... Salem?
I know that the best lobsters are in Essex, but I have a little bit of a dilemma. My fiance and I are having our wedding in Salem next weekend, and would like to take people to the beach and then out for lobsters on Sunday, following the festivities. Most people aren't renting cars because Salem is such a great walking city.
Any tips on how I can swing a beach/lobster day easily? Nothing is coming to mind. People can do the commuter rail--and I think they'd love that--but what beaches on the North Shore are truly walkable from the train, beyond Singing Beach (can't think of a cool lobster shack there)?
I'm certain there has to be a solution, but I'm drawing a blank.
Thank you, Chowhounds--in advance!
Beverly (Beverly Depot stop) is just one stop north from Salem on the train. Dane Street Beach (or even Independence Park - which is even closer to the train station) isn't that far from the Beverly Depot and there are quite a few restaurants in Beverly to choose from. I'm not sure where you'd go for lobster though. Free parking near both.
Maybe someone with a car could do a quick run to Market Basket and get some of their "live and kicking" $3.99 lobsters (can request for them to be cooked), deli salads, etc. and have the meal brought to the beach. Rowands Seafood is in Beverly - but I'm not sure if they're open on Sundays. http://rowandseafood.com/
The Lobster Shanty comes to mind first, small sort of dive bar atmosphere. It is located in dowtown Salem and close to everything Salem has to offer. I would call to make sure they can handle the amount of people in your party. Second thought would be Stromberg's Black Lobster Shanty, it is fairly good, but not really walking distance from downtown. If money is not a huge factor, Finz would be my choice. It is a bit pricey, but it is on the water and the food is done consistently well. they also have a rentable room upstairs for private parties.
Shanty says you can rent out the entire restaurant on selected dates....might be worth investigating. Alternatively, Woodman's in Essex does catering, so you might be able to get them to cater the whole thing for you down in Salem. Maybe at Winter Island Park (although not a super quick walk from downtown 2.2 miles)?
