Cheval - aka horse - aka yum!

  • 4

I just came back from Quebec and I found cheval, horse, in the Metro; I am curious if any butchers in the gta carry horse? Please share if you know of any. Horse, cheval, is incredibly high in protein, low in fat and very, very, tasty (please don't persecute me!!)! I used ground cheval in pasta and the entire family, including kids, thought it was the best pasta that they ever had (and yes I made many "I am soooo hungry I can eat a horse" jokes - they did not know it was horse.....they would have probably been mortified!). I have had the pleasure of having horse tartar at the Black Hoof (I was quite disappointed as it was spiced wayyyyy too much and I could not taste the meat; when eating exotic meat I actually like to taste it!!!! lol, crazy, I know!); I had horse at La Palette, steak I believe, and it was fabulous! I will probably be slammed for my thoughts but this meat is soooo tasty and healthy! I am not sure why horse is so readily available in QC but not ON?! Please share any insights and information you may have as I am very curious....

Thanks!

Rachel

I should have known to check St.Lawrence Market, I have found everything from camel to kangaroo there (at a price of course)! I am still curious as to why horse is so readily available in QC but not ON (Toronto)?! If anyone can answer that, I would very much be grateful for the answer!!!

It's a French vs English thing. Horse meat has always been accepted in France but is still kind of taboo in Britain and the US.
