Singapore - Mee Siam @ Chinta Manis Peranakan Cafe

klyeoh Aug 21, 2012 09:39 PM

Chinta Manis (mieaning "Sweet Love") is a newish Peranakan cafe which served up one of the meanest, melt-your-tongue, spicy-licious "Mee Siam" in Singapore. Rice noodles garnished with fresh shrimps, plump tofu cubes and hard-boiled egg, bathed in a tamarind-chilli-spice sauce. Definitely up there with some of the best Mee Siam I'd had in Singapore :-)

Dessert was "kueh dadar", a moist pandanus-flavored crepe rolled around moist dessicated coconut-brown sugar filling, and "kueh seri muka", pressed glutinous rice cake topped with coconut-pandan-egg custard.

I see that you tried their Nyonya Mee Siam which has the "dry" preparation. You should also try the Curry Mee Siam which comes with more gravy, and is very good.
Anyway, better enjoy it when you can because MacDonald's House will be pulled down soon to make way for the construction of the King Albert Park MRT station, part of the new Downtown line. So sad.

M_Gomez, for the best Mee Siam, I would go to Dino Cafe at Upper Thomson Rd. To get it any better, we have to cook it ourselves at home!

Selection of Nyonya kuehs at Chinta Manis:

      - Getuk ubi

      - Onde-onde

      - Kueh sarlat

      - Kueh lapis

      - Sago kelapa

All were pretty tasty - Chinta Manis today offers some great flavors which reminded me of how *good* Bengawan Solo used to be back in the late-80s/early-90s.

Another good place is Subway Niche. Have you tried Betel Box Bistro on Joo Chiat Road for nyonya food? It's my current favourite http://www.betelbox.com/bistro/
