i know there must be at least one or two!! also, has anyone been to pappy & harriet's, and if so, how is it? is it a touristy kind of place, or a down home honky tonk? i'm hoping it's the latter. thanks!

When I see questions like this, I realize I should start collecting cards or notes on places (see the discussion of this on the 'Not About Food' board).

Last March, on our way to Joshua Tree from the north, we happened quite by accident on a bar and grill that was REALLY off the beaten path, at the end of a dirt road maybe 2 miles off the highway (we were looking for a bathroom and I was getting desperate). Anyway, it was surrounded by dirt bikes, and had a really great 'honky tonk' atmosphere, surprisingly friendly given the remote location and the fact that everone else seemed to know each other....pool tables, burgers, cold beer. We were in a hurry to get to JT, but I would have liked to have lingered...

Of course, I can't remember the name, just that it was off of 247 and I think south of Flamingo Heights, between there and where 247 ends at 62. There was a grocery/minimart gas station right off the main road that you drive by first (a fact I remember vividly because they wouldn't let me use their facilities!). Could even have been the place you are talking about in Pioneertown, although I believe it was a mile or three to the east of 247, and my map shows Pioneertown being to the west of 247. But how many honky tonks on dirt roads can there be in the that area? :-)

just look for the dirt bikes, and enjoy the hunt!
