Anyone tried La Palapa yet?

Heard of it via restaurants.com.
What is that dessert in the top picture in the stack of 3 pictures?

  1. Man that brings back memories! I haven't been there in quite a few years, but it used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants back in the 80's. I will have to give them another try!

I remember it being pretty darn mediocre in the 90s. Maybe they've turned it around since then.

Ah yes, the memories. I grew up in Laredo, where we also had a La Palapa. It originally started in Nuevo Laredo in 1974, and the Laredo branch opened in 1980. I have fond memories of the Laredo La Palapa, and it was some of the best mexican food in town. The Laredo location closed in the early 2000's. I have been to the Austin La Palapa a few times since I moved to Austin in 1997 and the menu is definitely not the same. Much more Tex Mex than the Frontera Mexican that it used to be. The Alambres and Agujas (special cut beef ribs) are no longer there, nor the enchiladas callajeras with the chopped potatoes and carrots that were simmered in chile. Man, I miss the old La Palapa. Thanks for reminding me.

      2. I worked near there about four years ago. I would say it was solid but not noteworthy.

        1. according to their menu, they're sopapillas:
