Summer Only: Les Glaces et Les Sorbets of Fleur de Cocoa in Los Gatos
Some times it takes me awhile to follow up on a tip . . . only six years.

But yesterday I managed at long last to check out Fleur de Cocoa's French-style ice creams and sorbets, made during the summer months only. Two sorbets and five ice creams in the case, the butterfat is lower and the texture considerably denser akin to gelati. Naturally, at a chocolatier, I had to try the Chocolat Noir 68% glace and topped it off with Framboise (raspberry) sorbet. Other flavors were Tahitian vanilla bean, Pistachio, Caramel, and Extra Strong Coffee ice creams, as well as Mango sorbet.
Fleur de Cocoa allows two flavors in a single scoop, $3.75. The chocolate was so dense and dark with a rich and almost chewy mouthfeel and depth of flavor to match. The sorbet tasted like fresh, ripe berries with just enough sugar to pop the flavors. The housemade waffle cone is a buck more, and a must try. Thinner and much more delicate than any other I’ve tried, the cone tastes more like a buttery cookie crisp than a bland waffle. And if you’re as lucky as I was, the cone will crack and a second one will be slipped over it, as shown in this photo. Double your pleasure.

The ice creams will be available for another two weeks this year. And the other major news is that the shop changed hands this month. Let’s hope the ice cream formulation makes the transition intact.
