ISO : Lamb Shanks

Hi everyone. My mom is turning 60 in a couple of weeks so the rest of the family would like to surprise her with a sit down dinner party of arounf 40-50 people. We're thinking of doing a main using lamb shanks. Does anyone know a reliable source that ideally wouldn't cost an arm and a leg? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  1. They might not cost an arm and a leg, but they will cost a number of shanks!

Lamb shanks are a standard item in Persian cuisine, so you should be able to find them in the places along Yonge Street between Finch and Hwy 7. Alternatively, there are enough meat shops at the SLM that you should be able to find enough. In either case, you might have to order in advance to make sure you get them.

    1. Nader Halal in Mississauga has been my family's source for lamb shanks.

      1. That's a lot 'o' shanks...
Probably take you a few of days to pull it together..

        1. I'm assuming you'll be serving 1 lamb shank per person? Since it's lamb shanks, you'll be braising the lamb shanks in your oven, so really the size of your oven will dictate how many lamb shanks you'll be able to cook.

Wouldn't it be easier to simply roast a few legs of lamb? You can probably get 6-8 portions out of 1 leg of lamb, and you should be able to fit at least 6 legs of lamb in your oven.

We have a couple of commercial sized ovens, so it's not too much of a concern ... at least I hope it won't be.

The Metro stores in Mississauga have the 3-packs of frozen NZ lamb shanks. 15 or more packages would be best special ordered and at a better price.
