Wulf's Fish Market: Give them a second look.

Gave up on Wulf's years ago. Went back after they were sold and it had improved but not enough to make me a fan. Still had a "fishy" smell and not a wide range of options. Went today because i didn't have time to get to Cambrige and my beloved New Deal. The range had certainly improved and the smell was gone. The place felt spotless. The fish included very nice looking bronzino and other whole fish (I'm fond of my fish with its head and tail still on). We bought trout and fresh sardines. The trout was excellent, the sardines did not measure up to New Deal's. They were fresh enough but not as flavorful, with a bit of a muddy taste. However, because the trout was excellent we'll return when we can't face the trip across the river or can't order from Cyndi. It at least is now an acceptable option and I must say, a big improvement over its old self.

i wonder if those sardines were from New England maybe. Earlier this yr.,I had some from Maine that were muddy/ugh and I sent them back. And Portuguese appears to be the fav of chefs serving sardines, like Steve Johnson at Rendezvous (maybe you were already part of that discussion; i mentioned this on an earlier CH thread cuz i wanted to warn people away from the non portuguese ones.)

I did ask and they told me they were Portuguese. I'm inclined to think they are truthful but can only comment that they couldn't hold a candle to the ones I get at New Deal.

I was in the area last week, so I poked my head in looking for some tuna. What they had was more grey than red. It was some very sorry looking fish for sure. They told me they had more in back, whatever I needed, but I didn't stick around to check it out.

I was back in the neighborhood the other day and poked my head in to see how the fish look. The tuna still didn't look great to me, but I did pick up a half dozen Wellfleet oysters which ended up being very fresh (as good as the ones I get from New Deal).
