Jimmy's Vietnamese Sandwich Bar open in Bellingham

puzzler Aug 15, 2012 07:41 PM

They've been open about a week. Mrs. Puzzler and I split a Bahn Mi $5.95 (listed on the menu simply as Vietnamese Sandwich) with cold mixed meats (Thit Nguoi) and a Cold Noodle Bowl - chicken $7.95. Both were quite good, with nice fresh ingredients and flavorful sauces.

1323 11th St in Fairhaven, Bellingham. Mon-Sat 10am - 8pm. 360.933.4268

[sorry for the flipped images of the menu -- can't seem to delete or replace]

Excellent. Been waiting for them to open since May :-)

$6 feels steep for a banh mi. Guess they have no competition (does AW Bistro have banh mi and other Vietnamese foods ?).

Anyway can't wait to give 'em a whirl next time we're down. Thx for the update.

        AW doesn't do Vietnamese.

I'm bummed. They're not gluten free friendly. No, I don't mean the sandwiches :) I am a bun fiend and apparently can't eat theirs. Ah, if only Soy House had a satellite branch...

But hey, it's nice to see some variety in my immediate neighborhood.

Maybe you can bring your own gluten-free buns in and ask them to make the banh mi's with them !

Thank you for letting us know. I will stop by again. One of my very favorite meals is bun bo nuong - I'd love, love, love to be able to get it in my neighborhood.

I found their website. Puzzler's menu pics are too small to read for my eyes:

Hmm, don't see a vegetarian protein option. Will have to visit and check it out.

I tried a chicken bahn mi over the weekend. Very disappointing. This sandwich was so bland. No spice, no sour, no pop. BLAND. Vietnamese food is so vibrant, I'm afraid that this is an example of someone who would be at best an average cook of their country's cuisine trying to pass one over on the unsuspecting small towners who don't know better. Unfortunately, we Bellinghamsters have Seattle and Vancouver close by and we do know better. I doubt very much I'll go back. The best thing was the bread.

Exactly. I bought my husband one too - same sandwich, but we ate them separately - he on the ground and I in a plane. I was curious to know his reaction without tainting it - so I just asked him what he had thought of it. The first thing he said was bland. Acc to him, the bread was tasty, but the rest of it was very one dimensional. Either we've been married a while, or we had the same sandwich :)
