French Laundry Dress Code for women?

  • 7

I'm going to have lunch on Saturday with my BF's family. His aunt is an actress, so I'm kinda freaking out over what to wear. Any help would be appreciated. I know they have a strict dress code for men as far as wearing a jacket, but I am on a serious budget and need to know what is acceptable for me.

    1. Don't freak out. It's the same dress code as "business casual", and the only real problem for women is shorts and denim and tee shirts. Just wear a nice shirt and either a skirt or pants.

      1. I dressed comfortably since I was going to sit in a car and then at a table for a long time. I wore a nice skirt, but one that was fairly loose, especially in the waist! There were few women there in sparkly tops -- definitely marked them as tourists. Anything nice, tasteful will do. Don't worry about it and have a great time.

        1. I wouldn't wear linen since that wrinkles and looks horrid on a long journey from SF, unless you have a portable steamer..
Lunch is a little more casual but no jeans with that tube top with clear candie shoes.. ; )
It's hot this time of year and you don't want to be a sweaty mess..remember those seat covers in the womens bathroom are perfect for blotting and work great.
Crisp white shirt starched with some faux Tahitian pearls, always looks great with a nice pair of wedges...fab handbag..less is more.

          1. Agreed with everyone else - no denim, no shorts, nothing ratty or with holes - you'll be perfectly fine. Sundresses or a a top w/ skirts or pants works. It is still California after all - no need to break out a suit or a satin cocktail dress.

Thank you everyone! Such a big help. I Have so many dresses, but they are either casual or super dressy. I'm thinking my white sheath dress and some cute shoes and matching handbag. Hopefully this will work. Thank you all again.

Perfect...maybe a splash of color with a scarf and if you don't wear it, you can tie it around the handle of your handbag..
Have a great time..I prefer lunch at FL..you can walk across the street to the lovely veggie/herb garden..it's a lovely venue and the food is so oh la la..

I wouldn't worry too much. I wore an above the knee skirt, silk top from Anthropologie, and open-toed heels and felt appropriately dressed. Avoid spiky heels if you want to stroll through the garden mid-meal, which I recommend.
