The Wayside, Berlin, VT (between Montpelier and Barre)

I've taken to going to the Wayside more often these days than I ever did before, and I just wanted to post something in support of them. The food is not outstanding, but it is good, consistent, filling, and comforting. They make a good, solid chicken pie and there's always some interesting specials that aren't just not the typical menu, but are actually specially priced, as well.

I can't recall there being any items on the menu over $12, and most are under $10. They come with a decent array of side choices. The meals are very filling. In that last couple of months I've had chicken pie twice (made in two different ways, which was fun!) and breakfast a couple of times.

The service is pleasant and friendly, as well.

I used to be a bit snooty about it because they don't have "really great" breakfasts, but I've mellowed, and that doesn't matter. They serve a lot of local food that they get from local producers, and they make good, solid, hearty New England fare. They make their own soups and gravies, too. This would be a great place to take kids.

If you're in the area and are looking from some basic home cooking that isn't gonna be full of cilantro and micro foams, this is the place. ;)
