Pizza Squared (Tampa)

was very pleasantly surprised by Pizza Squared, located just south of USF on 30th street. It features "Detroit style pizza," which is a pan/bread style pizza topped with mozz and then drizzled with tomato sauce. The crust comes out crisp on the outside and soft and bready on the inside, in the best way possible. The plentiful cheese (mozz and brick) and the crust kind of blend into one another, and the stripes of thick sauce on top break it up perfectly. There is nothing fancy or gourmet about it, but it is damn good. Kind of like Scaccatta (sp?), the Sicilian bread often found in old school Tampa bakeries, on steroids. It is addictive--- two days after trying it, i returned for another. with a large for $11, it is very affordable. Pizza Squared has been added to my short list for pizza, with the likes of Wood Fired and Paci's. While it may not qualify as fine dining, it has its own distinct identity and the father and son team do what they do well. They opened early this year and I wish them success.
