Jalapeno Bagels

amyc927 Aug 13, 2012 06:20 PM

Anyone know of a place with good jalapeno bagels? Being a traditionalist, I have never even entertained the thought of such a thing, let alone eaten one! But a friend from upstate coming to town is itching to try them - no idea where she heard of them but any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I would guess that one of your friendly local bagel shops would be happy to bake up a dozen for you. Your friend can freeze the extras. I find that bagels freeze will in zip lock freezer bags.
My suggestions because I like their bagels:
    Tal Bagel
    Vic's Bagel Bar

Perhaps she's heard of them from...and don't laugh...Au Bon Pain. They have a "jalapeno/cheese" bagel that, believe it or not, is pretty damn good.

I believe it. Au Bon Pain has a cinnamon bagel that was also pretty darn tasty. It was really more like a big bun (but not sweet or sticky or anything) with tasty cinnamon baked in.

Sounds more like a "bread ring" to me. So many places call their bread rings bagels.
If they are not boiled in water they are not true "water" bagels even thought they may taste good.
A Doughnut Plant PB&J tastes great but it's not a bagel.

I agree the jalapeno cheese bagel is really good at Au Bon Pain. I cant think of it in the same category as a bagel, only thing in common is it has a hole. It's nice toasted as the cheese gets a bit frico like.

They're so moist, too. Never had mine toasted, but I like the way it sounds. Thanks!

Ideally with their own flavored cream cheeses. It's true, they can be good in their own way.

I think Brooklyn Bagel has them, for a better overall bagel experience.

Good to know...a jalapeno bagel sounds pretty awesome. I wonder which flavor of cream cheese is ideal?

I don't know truthfully, but the sundried tomato cream cheese matches well with the Asiago bagels. They usually just give you a small plastic contained to apply it yourself.

Good call. That sounds like a good match - or even just plain! I need to check this place out. Thanks, sugartoof!

Yeah, there are better bagels to be had in the city, and we're not talking about the healthiest bakery chain but for a novelty flavor, they can hit the spot.

Agree, Leah, Au Bon Pain's are good, though I haven't had one in year.! They have a lighter texture and are a bit oilier than "real" bagels and I have enjoyed them toasted au naturale!

It's the only thing I eat @ ABP. Whenever I'm in an airport, it's what I crave for bkfast!

Lenny's Bagels on Broadway at 98th St.: IIRC there is a "bad boy" bagel that has jalapeno, cheese and some other flavor. I'm not sure how pronounced the jalapeno is. I like their bagels, though: I might rank them above Tal's but not above Absolute.

I tried the Jalapeno-Asiago cream cheese (on a mini egg bagel) at Brooklyn Bagel (Broadway in Astoria) this morning. It was tasty but SO spicy. And I like spicy. I was crying on the R train. I don't think they have Jalapeno bagels though.
