  1. Just report it - they'll take it down.

    1. Yes, we've had a lot of spammers lately. Reporting it is the best way to bring it to our attention. Since it's a weekend and we don't have moderators on the site all the time, it may take us a little while to clean it up.

Only reason I posted it here was the volume was so much greater than an isolated spam or two. And it has continued after the original ones were deleted....

        1. re: cwdonald

Unfortunately it's lots of people spamming with different user names, and we have to clean up each spammer one at a time, so please just do keep reporting them when you see them.

          1. re: The Chowhound Team

Sounds like you need to rejigger your programming in such a way as to sequester initial posts from new accounts. If there is a second post within a minute, that account should be flagged so no posts from that account appear until they have been reviewed.

How many unique visitors and hw much annual advertising revenue does your website bring in?

            2. re: The Chowhound Team

Lot's of spam on the General Topics board now.

              1. re: EM23

As the mods have said, no need to post here, just use the report button.

                1. re: carolinadawg

Thanks for the very positive comment carolinadawg. I am sure everyone appreciated it. I think Grey's suggestion makes a whole lot of sense. Spammers keep creating new accounts.. and it is standard procedure to have some sort of check/verification of an email address prior to giving someone access.

                  1. re: cwdonald

There is a verification process in place for new registrations, but spammers who are actual people, as opposed to bot-nets, have no problems passing those checks. The kind of arms race you can get into with spammers is expensive and time-consuming and tends to alienate actual users, as well, since it invariably involves making participation in the site more difficult.

Does that make sense to you? Don't you think the owners of this site are sophisticated and knowledgable enough to deal with spammers?

                      1. re: carolinadawg

You seem to be disputing the authorized representative (since you are quoting her here) of the owners of this site. I would tend to believe that Jacquilynne knows of what she speaks since she, and Chowhound (and CBS for that matter) have plenty of experience dealing with spammers (as well as actual site users like you and me).

                        1. re: Servorg

You mis-read or misunderstood my post. Your point Is exactly mine.

                          1. re: carolinadawg

Sorry, now I see you were disputing cwdonald's suggestion on how to handle spammers by quoting Jacquilynne's post. My apologies.

                            1. re: Servorg

No prob. I probably wasn't clear enough about who my comment was aimed at...I tend to rely on the "re:" in the corner to sort that out, and sometimes it not immediately apparent.

Naw, I saw that...I just figured you aimed wrong and hit an unintended target... ;-D>

                    2. re: carolinadawg

I have found that the threads are deleted very shortly after I have reported them, within minutes.

                      1. re: wyogal

You may not have been the only one to have reported the spammer...

                        1. re: Gio

exactly, but the posts disappear within minutes. That's my point.

            3. This has been going on for several days now... just keep reporting the new names as they post.
