Quick help for Lake Geneva, WI?

Just got iin to Chicago to visit my family and just found out we are heading out tomorrow for Lake Geneva, WI for a couple of days. We already plan to stop at Anderson's Candy Shop in Richmond, IL on the way there and/or back but are looking for some good food recs in and around Lake Geneva. No fine dining, just good food for a family group of 10 from 8 to 80 years old. In particular, a morning place to get donuts or breakfast pastries to eat at our hotel and a SUnday night dinner that would hopefully have great food (we have veggies and carnivours in the group), good value, and bonus would be a view. Seems everytime they go they wind up at Popeye's and we want to try something different.

Not much LG info here on CH, so hopefully this might help others as well.

If you're still in town, here's a follow-up with restaurant recommendations. I cannot recommend either Popeyes or Sprecher's. I have had bad food at both. The only restaurant in LG with good food and a good view of Geneva Lake is The Grandview, but that's fine dining.

Be aware that this week is Venetian Festival, so they'll be starting set-up Monday and you should expect some road closures along the lakefront.

With Venetian Festival in town, I would recommend heading around the lake for some more peaceful options: Millie's outside of Delavan for breakfast; Gordy's in Fontana for a lunch (and good view of the west end of the lake). Pino's in Walworth can easily handle groups and has good pizza and Italian. Mars west of LG for ribs (and also does have a good view but of Lake Como). For a good chain restaurant that can handle groups, The Charcoal Grill in Burlington. If you must stay in Lake Geneva during Venetian Festival, the Tuscan. Best bakery in the area is 30 minutes southwest of LG in Harvard, IL - Swiss Maid Bakery, but Sentry's donuts really aren't too shabby.

We are now back from our trip and here's a brief report.
We stayed at the Cove so Specher's was a convenient carry-out pool-side lunch. Ok stuff.
I dorve down to Lake Side Tap and Grill near Bigfoot beach to check it out for dinner...alas it is shut down so I'm glad I didn't drag the family there.
I threw a dart and we all went to Tuscan Grill and the dart hit darn close to teh center of the target. Good food, really nice service from our waitress (and I rarely compliment service but she was very good). Carnivour entrees were a little pricey, but the place was nice but not stuffy, had a good vibe about it, and didn't feel touristy. Once again, food was good or better across the board and portions were good as well.
The next morning was my donut adventure. The only LG donut place closed down, bagels weren't going to work, and the hip bakery next to SImple was tempting but a little pricey for 9. So, I took a 20 minute or so ride to Hebron, IL to a tiny house/building with a cardboard "Donut Shop" sign in the window. A great find for donuts and Americana! Really good assorted cake donuts that my family all enjoyed.

Glad to hear that overall you had a good trip. You are a very serious Donuthound if you found that place! I went to school in Hebron, and those donuts were my breakfast most of my senior year. :-) I didn't even think to suggest it. And I'll also smack my head in shame because I should have suggested Crandall's for a family dinner. You drove right past it on Hwy. 47 where the speed limit drops north of town. Maybe next time?

LG could really use a donut shop! That being said, my trip was better because of that journey! And yes I noticed Crandall's on the way and will mention it to my family for their next trip.

Not sure I mentioned it but we stopped at Anderson's Candy Shop in Richmond on the return trip. My 2nd time there...really good stuff, and again, a great slice of Americana.

Not much LG info here on CH ....

I posted a pretty lengthy LG area review not too long ago, but it's actually in a Waukesha County thread and would be heard to find. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/843025

Nooooo! Fight the lure of Popeyes! :)

Breakfast-wise, I like Boatyard Bagels. It's right downtown on the main drag. In-house made bagels and also a nice selection of breakfast sandwiches.

Unfortunately, the restaurant that best fits your dinner bill (Simple Cafe) is only open for breakfast/lunch. For a group that size I would probably suggest the Sprecher Pub in the Cove Hotel. They have a good mix of types of food that would fit everyone's requirements. Also, it's located right across Flat Iron Park from the lake and has great views of the water and the Riviera/marina area.

        Have fun!
