Cafe Cogo - Pity gorgeous space offset by lousy food!!
With a Chinese/Cantonese name using characters and intonation that closely resembles the word 'Michelin', Cafe Cogo is the newest addition to the Markham's Chinese/Hong Kong style food scene.
Located in the same plaza as the AYCE Japanese place - Shogun, the restaurant is housed in a humongous modern space with waterfall walls and flat screen TV playing NOT Chinese soap operas but Food Network shows!! A good sign!! You might ask?! WRONG!!!
Menu is huge and varied, with baked and stirred fry rice and HK style pasta dishes, congees, Cantonese B-B-Q meats, soup and fried noodles, dim sums, desserts, drinks....etc. Not unlike Richmond Court or Congee Queen.
Since I was dining alone, I just ordered a couple of supposedly 'fail-safe' dishes. Won-Ton noodles and a plate of Braised Chui-Hau beef brisket and tendons. Price was extremely reasonable and the size of the dishes was huge!! Unfortunately, same kudos cannot be said about the taste and quality of the food. Instead of 'al dante' noodles, what I was given was a bowl of 'way over-cooked' mushy noodles. The won-ton morsels was hard and tasteless and the soup totally lacked character. First time in years I have to leave a bowl of noodles semi-untouched!
As for the braised brisket and tendons. What can go wrong?! Well! Almost everything! First off, the taste was indescribably weird!!!! However, what was even worse was the inclusion of 'burnt' meat in the dish. Scraped from the bottom of the stew pot, most of the brisket pieces were charred on one side and tasted like burnt charcoal. Again, with the dish almost untouched, I called for the bill, pointed out the 'creative work' of the chef, paid and left!
Next stop! Burger King down the road!!!
Why the place was so full really baffled me??!!
