Pasta

I struck out here with my enquiry about fresh cannelli beans, but I'll try an enquiry about pasta. Does anyone know if Garofalo is available in Chicago outside of Costco where you have to buy 8 pounds? Riviera does not have it. Or Gragnano pasta?

Bought some Garofalo pasta at Fresh Farms in Niles earlier today, they were on sale for $1.79 for a one pound bag (I bought bucatini and spaghetti).

Their website says Roundy's carries it so I'd try Mariano's.

OK, the Mariano's on Randolph had an extremely small selection of Garofalo which included pappardelli (sp) and a large tubular pasta and 2 whole wheat pastas. However, the Roundy's brand of pasta package says it is crafted in Gragnano and that is where Garofalo is as well. So, I bought a package of spaghetti and we shall see.

As a side note, I have fallen in love with Marianos. It's beats those other two local chains with no effort. Found these today to my utter delight. Beautiful, fresh zucchini blossoms for 20c each!

And I bought King Arthur's Bread Flour for less than the other chains.

I just wonder if they can make it work financially. I haven't scrutinized their earnings report and it's likely too early to tell, but it's an expensive model to maintain. I still remember being awed by Byerly's when they entered this market -- and disappointed when they left.

They are planning to build/open more stores, so who knows. I remember Byerly's.

I found Garofalo pasta at Sunset Foods in Northbrook. They had a variety of unknown to me pastas. Garofalo was available in 5-6 shapes, but no spaghetti. Better selection than at Mariano's.
