It's been a challenging year for the growers all over France - we had a very hard freeze very late in the spring, followed by a miserably cool wet spring, then a very cool wet summer thus far.
We spoke with a Vouvray producer last month who said it wasn't shaping up to be a disaster, but certainly one of the worst years they've had in a while -- he said he the mildew was running rampant.
It's a crummy year for gardening all around -- tomatoes are succumbing to blight even in the commercial fields (nobody I know has tomatoes this year - mine are healthy, but not producing) soft fruits are slow to ripen (and then are watery-tasting because it's been so wet) ---only my lettuce is doing well, which is a big statement as to the temperature, as lettuce here has usually bolted by the middle of July.
