Margaret's Soul Food, Arlington - Top-Notch!

Discovered this place

http://www.margarets-catering.net/home.htm

when I was looking around Youtube for "Soul Food Arlington VA" and came across this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvPSJJ...

Went there to take out some lunch for the 4 of us (it's take out only) and found: Absolutely terrifying location that looks like a factory, a bit unnerving for someone not as used as I am to holes-in-the-wall, up a very steep drive across from Chinn Funeral Service. It's not far from the Weenie Beanie, in the earthier-but-redeveloping side of Shirlington.

Meals average $8 to $9 including very generous entree and two very generous sides, all cooked from scratch.

I got ribs, potato salad and greens. Ribs a bit dry, but very flavorful. Greens and potato salad wonderful!

One son got Jerk Chicken and the other got Fried Chicken (fried to order), Macaroni/Cheese and Greens - they're usually very picky, but neither would share even a little bite, declaring that we'd be going back often.

Wife declared her pulled pork sandwich to be heavenly, and she wouldn't share either!

I think we've got a new go-to place!

Got lunch there today. Three of us and we will return. No greens, because they weren't done cooking and she wouldn't sell them until they were ready to suit her. That's home cooking. The green beans, potato salad, mac and cheese, fish, and chicken, and sweet potatoes were hits. The chicken was better than the fish, but the fish was good. People in the office came to see what smelled so good. We hope to try the sweet potato pie next time.

Henry's Soul Food Cafe in DC is known for their sweet potato pie, and rightfully so. They also have wings with mambo sauce.

Mixed reviews on Yelp, I've checked.

I think some weight needs to be given to expectations, this isn't one of those dinners you sometimes see here that read "my $125 mac & cheese with truffles was cold and the waiter was awful, should I go back?"

No offense meant, Steve - absent the above consideration, and absent my family letting me taste their entrees, I'd say "entree OK, sides wonderful". I'm just a $10-or-less-lunch kind of guy, and this was way better and more generous than the usual under-$10 lunch or dinner.

Sidebar: Burger King Sweet Potato Fries: great.

I've been there. It's purely a carryout. I see them at various outdoor events. Maybe not the best circumstances to judge what they do. When I was there I got a fried fish sandwich with a couple of sides. It was ok.

Huh, I would have never thought to search for food on YouTube.
