Best fast food/chain shakes?

Nitrofoodguy Aug 8, 2012 07:58 AM

What are your best and worst fast food/chain shakes? I'm in SC.
Sonic (very good banana shakes, real ice cream)
Jack in the Box (nice and thick, tasty, real ice cream)
Steak & Shake (good shakes, bad food)
Chick-fil-A (even though they use soft serve, they are still very good, especially the PEACH shake)
Hardee's (real ice cream, pretty good)
Dairy Queen (the Blizzards are very good, but I find the shakes watery)
Arby's (meh, but the Jamocha Shakes are decent)
McDonald's (always found them thin and watery with artificial taste)

I'm addicted to the peppermint shake at Chik Fil A and soon it will be Gone! Just had one this past saturday though.

Culver's shakes, made with their frozen custard and a wide varieties of flavors/mix-ins. So delicious.

I've never had Sonic's banana shake but I'm willing to bet that Fatburger's Maui Banana Shake is, at least, as good

I like that Jack-in-the-Box comes with whipped cream and a cherry. Some of their seasonal flavors are good, too.

I had a really delicious peanut butter shake from Which wich. It's not on the menu but they had the ingredients and made it for me. Thick and rich.

I also like the neopolitan shake from In n Out. Vanilla, strawberry and chocolate all together.

Roy Rogers Pumpkin shake, made with hard serve Pumpkin ice cream.

Second Roy Rogers. Ours use Hershey's Ice Cream.

Shake Shake makes an excellent shake as well.

Shake Shack - love the peanut butter and the chocolate -- love all their ice cream items, really.

A Midwestern variation is to add malted milk to shakes and we shorthand it and call it a malt. In this regard, Dairy Queen makes a good malt. We have a local fast food eatery that makes a good chocolate shake called Be-Bops and others rave about a regional fast food eatery shakes/malts [Culver's]. I had one once and it was decent.

Ever see people scrape french fries on they're Wendy's Frosty? Not for me but alot of folks do it, both kids and adults. Fuddruckers makes a great shake.

I'll second Steak & Shake - IMO, The ONLY FF shake worth mentioning.

The worst, by far, Johnny Rockets. They simply add flavored syrups to a "vanilla" soft serve.

Really? I haven't had one in years, but I used to think Johnny Rocket's shakes were the very best among chains (at least here in Los Angeles). They unquestionably were not just flavored syrups added to a soft serve. They were full-fledged shakes made from scooped ice cream. Have they changed?

I could be wrong about the soft serve (it's been several years). If so, it was the poorest quality ice cream I've ever had. Nevertheless, they did use a vanilla-based product & simply added a syrup to make Strawberry & chocolate shakes. I was VERY disappointed with my so-called strawberry shake (complete with white & red streaks). That was my first and last visit to a JR.

For me it's probably been about ten years, but my experiences back then were never the same as yours. They always used perfectly fine ice cream, the same that was used to top their pies a la mode, and it was prepared in a traditional shake blender with a metal cup. What you're describing sounds a lot like the machine-mix shakes served at most fast-food places, but it's not even close to what I ever received at Johnny Rocket's. I hope they haven't changed that dramatically.

                          Wendy's chocolate frosty...my fave.

Is the Frosty even a shake? Isn't it just softserve?

Second Chick-fil-A shakes. I just wish they brought back the banana/Nilla wager shake they had last year.

Roy Rogers makes a great milkshake with Hershey's ice cream.

+1,000,000!!! I love the Chick-fil-A banana pudding shake! It's probably a good thing that it's a seasonal flavor...

Got talked into a peppermint shake at the chik fil a last week. I have a nasty head cold and it was like a magic elixir. Now I want another one. I was at an overheated mall in the norheast so it was quite the pick me up.
