fresh crab in Sacramento?

Help,
I am new to the Sacramento area and am looking for FRESH, cooked crab to take home and eat. Currently, I know that Western Boat and Tackle in San Rafael does a suberb job of cooking and preparing fresh dungeness crab to take home. I would like to find somewhere in Sac that does a comparable job. Does anyone out there know of such a place? Joe's crab shack is OUT! The Asian market has live crab, but they won't cook and prepare them. Whole Foods has crab legs in their seafood counter, but I bet they were frozen first. Thank you all for your input!

Hmm... Try calling both Corti Brothers and the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op.

I don't know if either has fresh cooked crab, but they do have seafood counters and very high standards of quality overall. Even if they don't work out for you on this front, both are places that a new-to-Sacramento food lover should get to know.

One more "need to get to know" for seafood is Taylor's Market on Freeport Blvd. Also, dry aged beef, great veal, nice, although small, wine selection. Habit forming.

Would second on the Corti rec - would also try Whole foods (916) 488-2800 on Arden. And, on Corti - even if they don't have any in the case out front - be sure to ask - they occasionally have stuff in back - especially their whole fish! Good luck and welcome to Sacramento.

Thanks for the welcome, and the tip. I had already found Whole Foods.......yummy. I made Oysters Rockefeller and barbque salmon just last week with seafood I got there. It was great, but I am still looking for that place that is boiling their own live crabs for immediate sale.

I think Sacramento is awfully far inland to be able to find a place cooking up their fresh crabs for immediate sale. Perhaps there will be some place doing this as a promotion when the crab season starts again, but I don't think you are going to find this on a regular basis.

When crab is in season, the best place is the farmers market in Davis. The fisherman brings his load in on Friday, cooks up some Friday evening, and brings both live and cooked to the market on Saturday morning. He also (usually) has smoked salmon and sometimes tuna. great stuff. worth waiting for.

            Hey Billy,

First off let me welcome you to Sacramento!!!!!!!

Next let me give you what I think is a total brainstorm! Call, email, fax, page...whatever.... one of the largest wholesalers in the area. I looked it up on the internet for you and found the link below, I have absolutely nothing to do with them however if I was looking for fresh seafood I would call them and see if they could tell me who is buying Fresh. Be prepared to pay, 'cause it has to be brought in from Alaska or Washington about this time of year.

FRESH CRAB IS LIVE CRAB AND LIVE CRAB ONLY!!! The only sources in the Sacto area, by my experience, are Asian. I've never seen anything except DEAD CRAB at Corti's, SNFC, and Whole Foods. Note: If you can't tell the difference, buy canned at Costco - it's cheaper.

I agree with Boskos. I am not aware of a market that keeps live crabs, and would cook them for you right out of the tank. However, maybe you can get this from a restaurant. There are several Chinese restaurants with live crabs in tanks. New Canton on Broadway, also Umeko on Folsom. Order it as a take out.
