Gluten free beer at Trader Joes, finally

BluPlateSpec Aug 5, 2012 07:48 PM

Just saw a new gluten free beer at Trader Joes, "Celia" 6.5% abv from The Alchemist brewery in Ipswich,MA. The first GF beer I've seen at TJ's.

Are you sure it's not from The Alchemist in Waterbury, VT?

Is this an East Coast Trader Joe's, by the way?

Yes it's from that Vermont brewery but the label has a Massachusetts address and the cardboard holder has the Vermont address. The brewer, John Kimmich says he developed it so his wife who was diagnosed with Celiac could enjoy beer again. I found it at TJ's NYC store. It's full name is Celia Saison. I don't know if it's a one time thing or will continue to be available.

I thought they did all their brewing at VT, but poking around, it looks like Celia Saison is some kind of collaboration -- or something -- with Mercury Brewing Co. in MA.

Celia is contract brewed at Ipswich under supervision by The Alchemist - what all the cool kids are calling "gypsy brewing" these days to avoid the contract brew stigma. Necessary since they don't even have the capacity in Waterbury to keep up with Heady Topper demand.

First batch of Celia was not up to John's standards, was shipped out by mistake, and then recalled.

TJ's account is probably a big deal for them.
