    What is "American-fusion", impatient one?

"American (new)," "eclectic," are the correct phrases I now have learned.

Our suburban close friends love _Square Meal_, and have invited us there for the umpteenth time. It's a good restaurant, but Hell, this is Manhattan. I'm sick of the place, and am tired of its never changing (over years) menu. Plus the cuisine, such as it is, holds no interest forme.

As to their cuisine choice, I'll concede. I have counter offered _Northern Spy_, which is three blocks from me, has the same ways with food, has a more hip vibe (East Village and all that). _Square Meal_ has the feel of older middle-class pleasant memories on special occasions (not that there's anything wrong with that), which actually describes who we are and what we'll be doing, and that depresses me; the restaurant crowd will only sink me deeper into my slough of despond.

The "Upper West Side" bit was a miscommunication between our friends, me, and Chowhound.

If you can go anywhere in Manhattan and want something that's creative American or similar, I'd try:
        Public
        Prune
        Fedora
        The NoMad
        Perilla
        Ma Peche
