Is cloudy walnut opil spoiled?

I just bought a bottle of walnut oil. I didn't notice the cloudiness in it until I got it home. Should I return it, or is this normal? The expiration date is five months from now (2/2013).

It was on the shelf, not refrigerated.

(Oops, obviously, I meant "walnut oil!)

Thanks--I'm taking it back. It's not that it is just unclear, it has kind of a "veil" hanging in it that settles on the bottom. Looks pretty disgusting, like something is decaying in there. I don't want to open it.

I know exactly what you mean about that "veil" thing. Definitely take it back. Somehow (maybe it wasn't sealed properly) bacteria got in there.

Walnut oil that is cloud isn't necessarily bad. When walnut oil is stored at low temperatures (somewhere below about 55 degrees) it will develop a cloudy appearance but still be just fine. In your case, unless your cupboard gets to 55 degrees or below, I'd return it to the place of purchase. You could open it first to see if it smells rancid. Choice is yours.

I shouldn't be cloudy at all. I'd return it without opening. If you do open it, the smell of rancidity will be unmistakeable.
