September in Lucca/Pisa Region

I've enjoyed reading the posts about other parts of Tuscany but we will be staying in the northwestern portion of Tuscany in September. We will have a base near Barga but plan to drive around the area. We would very much like to have recommendations for both Lucca and Pisa and also for smaller towns in the area--not necessarily looking for special occasion type places but, rather, affordable high quality trattorie or other venues.

  1. Hello,

We are visiting Lucca (just for a day trip) this summer and I came across this article in my Travel and Leisure magazines, which is also online.

    1. Be sure to go to the upper right-hand corner of this page and do a search for Lucca. You will find a number of recommendations and comments already here for you to review.

I visited Barga 15 years ago. I wish I could make some dining recommendations, but it was just too long ago. Be sure to visit the Duomo on the hill overlooking Barga.

Barga lies in the valley of the Serchio River. It is one of the most untouristed parts of Tuscany. I would highly recommend driving north up the valley to visit the towns of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and Castiglione di Garfagnana.

Here is a past thread with extensive recommendations for Lucca:
