Moromi- available anywhere in NYC?

I recently stayed at an upscale hotel in Tokyo. Every morning there was a tall, thin glass of a beverage that tasted similar to plum wine on the dining table. It was thick and juice-like, and reminded me of my grandmother's plum jam. I have since learned it is called Moromi (unrefined saki). So far I have unsuccessful turning up anything on Google that appears similar. Any suggestions about where to purchase Moromi would be much appreciated.
Incidentally- it is supposed to lower cholesterol.

Many thanks!

It's actually called "sake" not "saki"...

It may have been "moromi-su", which is a type of drinking vinegar from Okinawa. I think it comes in different flavors. Mitsuwa might have it or similar type of beverage. Maybe some of the Japanese stores around. They are kind of popular in Japan now.

Usually, moromi refers to what we would normally call "mash" in beer brewing or whiskey distilling. It's the raw ingredient (rice) that has been heated and mixed with yeast. if you are looking for a cloudy, slightly viscous and sweet unfiltered and unrefined version of sake, you can explore "nigori" sake. Sakaya has some and so do other large liquor stores. But the stuff you drank in the morning was probably drinking vinegar which are purported to have all sorts of health benefits.

I should have thought twice after reading the OP's description. I was thinking of sake kasu, which I have never seen in NYC. Article of interest: http://www.esake.com/Sake-Food/Kasu/k...

I will try Mitsuwa. I would think it is unlikely that it was alcoholic since it was served at breakfast. I was told it was good to lower cholesterol and for weight loss. I just enjoyed the sweet/sour taste, the plum flavor and the thick consistency.
Thanks for the suggestion to try Mitsuwa. I spoke with Rick yesterday- he was very nice and he, too, suggested I try Mitsuwa.
I may not have yet located moromi, but, having now been introduced to Sakaya, I will definitely be ordering some sake from them :-)

It was probably moromi-su, drinking vinegar. Calling it just moromi sounds like it should be alcoholic.

What was written to me by the restaurant that served is :
"The drink we are referring to is probably the pure Moromi, a fermented vinegar made from the Moromi ( i.e. unrefined sake), which is supposed to lower cholesterol readings, and it is touted even helping to burn body fat."

So yes- I think it was moromi-su.
            Thanks !

I have never seen it in NYC commercially (restaurants apparently can obtain it)...But you might
call Sakaya or drop by to ask either Rick or Hiroko...

Thanks for the suggestion, penthouse pup. I spoke with a young lady at Sakaya who had never herad of Moromi. I will call back and ask for one of the gentleman you suggested.
