Middle Eastern Pickled Turnips
Where can I buy these red little beauties you get in any Middle-Eastern restaurant?

I'll give you a very general response...I'm sure someone here has the details. There's a guy (Iranian?) who makes pickles in town. He sells his products at various local farmers' markets around town and he definitely makes pickled turnips. Sorry about the vagueness.
On the other hand, I've bought the commercially jarred type and they're quite good too.›9 Replies-

Yongeman-are you referring to Toorshi Foods? I think he's Armenian? Are they any good? Always wanted to try!

A selection of Toorshi Foods pickled veg are also carried at Royal Beef @ Danforth/Woodbine. Had an amazing jar of their mixed pickled veg (loads of cauliflower) a couple of weeks ago.
edit: Didn't see any jars of pickled turnips at Royal Beef, although I remember noting at least 3 other varieties of Toorshi brand pickles.

Yes! The brand is Toorshi. I saw them at McEwan recently. They aren't cheap, but they are delicious!!! I bought them directly from the owner at the North St. Lawrence Market on a Saturday morning a year ago, or so. The spicy version, with Thai chiles, is fantastic.

www.toorshifoods.comAs long as the turnover is high, any Middle Eastern shop selling them should be fine. I think I've seen them in the bulk area at Ararat on Avenue Road.

re: Davwud
There's a retail grocery store attached to the Sababa Middle East sit-down restaurant, on Steeles Ave. W., between Bathurst and Yonge Sts., and while I've been in the grocery store many times, I've never actively looked for pickled turnips - which I also enjoy. But the store sells pretty much everything for takeout that's on offer in the next-door restaurant, and then some, so there's no harm in phoning to find out about supplies of pickled turnips - assuming you're anywhere in the neighbourhood. (I satisfy my craving at Tov-Li, a kosher falafel joint on Bathurst St. where pickled turnips as a topping adds immeasurably to the crunchy pleasure of a first-rate falafel sandwich.)

The market at 1996 Lawrence E near Arz (Nasr?) has them too, but they are jarred and who knows how old. Likely won't be as good as the ones you've had at good restaurants.
However, it is the season to make them ! Baby turnips are at the markets everywhere. Had another version of picketed turnips last weekend (small ones cut in quarters) and they were amazing. Ever so slightly sweeter than the middle eastern style, but tart and tasty. Maybe worth a try !
