10 days camping down the Cape....a trip report (Hangar B, Friendly Fisherman, Sesuit Cafe....)
Hello! I posted here about 6 months ago about good recs for the Brewster area, in advance of tent camping for 10 nights at Nickerson. I received a lot of suggestions and wanted to report back on the places where we dined.
We arrived on a Sunday morning and went for breakfast at the Hole In One in Orleans. Arrived after 10 and had about a 30 minute wait. Food was good, not great. Donuts were very tasty and helped ease the wait. I got the Eggs with Corned Beef Hash Benedict (not the actual name, but eggs with hash instead of bacon...) which was pretty good. Busy place, probably due to how small it is. Good way to start the day. Left to set up camp and ate at the campground for the first 3 nights....hobo packs, salmon with corn on the cob, spaghetti and meatballs.
For our first dinner out, we went up to Wellfleet following a great day at Marconi and had dinner on the beach at Mac's (not Mac's Shack....a bit too fancy with a 5 and 8 year old, probably too pricey as well). We got fried whole bellies, fried scallops, chowder and 1/2 dozen littlenecks on the half shell. It was lovely. Food was great. The littlenecks were so good, lovely weather, water view. BYOB. All good.
The next morning (I think....the days sort of blended together) we went to Chatham for Hangar B, which was my most eagerly anticipated meal of the trip. We waited about 20 minutes or so at about 9:30 on a Thursday morning. Had a tasty donut with jam (strawberry with thyme and raspberry with red wine vinegar) that was really good, along with coffee while waiting. My husband ordered the Brioche french toast ("excellent, bread pudding style, one big chunk...as it should be") with a side of sausage, which he claimed was nothing special. I had the red flannel hash, which was unlike anything I've ever seen on a breakfast menu and it was wonderful. Beets, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, bacon hash with perfectly poached eggs and a horseradish creme fraiche. Wow. Lovely to look at, even better to eat. The girls each got a children's size waffle, which was way too much food. Waffles were a bit dense. Should have been lighter. Great space...probably nothing like it on the Cape?
One night we went to Sesuit Cafe in Dennis. Lobster Roll, fried clams, fried scallops, chowder. Nice view. It seems a bit overpriced compared to other "seafood" places (1/2 doz. littlenecks here were 11 compared to 7 at Mac's), but the setting is really great and it seems to be an experience. Very good.
Had lunch at Chach up in PTown. Have had breakfast there 3 or 4 times in the past and have always loved it, but lunch was underwhelming. My husband had the cuban and said it was okay (too much cheese, too much mayo) and I had the falafel which was ok, but sort of bland. Still, it was easier than trying to find parking to get a sandwich to go before heading out to the visitor's center to bike to Race Point Beach....watched whales from the shore!!
Guapo's in Brewster for dinner one night. Fish tacos, chips and salsa, carne asada tacos. Standard fare. The fish tacos are pretty good, but sort of bland....i wish the slaw had a bit more kick to it. But we needed something easy and close and not totally fried, so it was good.
Sandwiches from Ferretti's Market in Brewster twice for days at the beach. Excellent. Great, fresh bread, good size (as in huge), good price. They also had a great selection of steaks and marinated meats etc.....which we meant to grab for back at the campsite, but never did. Great recommendation.
Friendly Fisherman, Eastham. Got the Fisherman's Platter for $36, per CapeCodGuy's rec. It was great. The platter had clam strips, whole bellies, shrimp, cod, scallops and fries. It fed the four of us, along with a huge, fresh Caesar's salad for $6 and some subpar chowder (did someone say not to get it? i think so!). They do a great job of shielding the outdoor seating area from rte. 6 and with a package store right next door, it's very convenient for BYOB.
And, the Yardarm in Orleans. Ate there the last night while we were getting 2 inches of rain. 45 minute wait on a tuesday. Loved it more for the atmosphere than the food, but the food wasn't bad at all. Great chowder, plate of littlenecks steamed with garlic and beer, baked scrod, which was a welcome change from all of the fried food. Would definitely go again.....also noticed the many people at the bar ordering martinis! Wish i drank them, must have seen 10 people in 30 minutes order them.
Oh, one last visit to Hangar B, on our way home. Husband got the lemon ricotta pancakes. Very good, but they were huge and just too much. He preferred the french toast. I got the Breakfast Sandwich, which was 2 eggs scrambled with cheddar, roasted tomato, avocado, arugula on a griddled croissant with home fries. absolutely excellent. one of the best breakfast items i think i've had ever. Really love this place.
Thank you all who helped steer us to some of these great places. I truly appreciate it. And after trying my luck on some other regional boards (sometimes with great success, others...not so much), I really am grateful that the Southern NEw England board is so active. This is such a great resource!

And now I'm jonesing for the red flannel hash again at Hangar B. It may be be favorite unique breakfast item I've ever had anywhere.
Your report on Chach was similar to ours. We had a terrific breakfast there on a Sunday morning two weeks ago (one of the best of the vacation) but an earlier lunch was not only meh but the service was minimal to say the least. We ordered a grilled cheese and tomato and a chicken quesadilla- two no brainers- but what arrived were plates of cheese and sauce, yet to be revealed as they were buried under potato chips and a yet to be touched soggy tortilla. The waiter disappeared for the rest of the meal - no coffee refills no "how is everything" and a bus person whisked away our half empty plates with no comment. It was hard enough to engage the waiter for a check and the evidence had been removed so we chalked it up to bad picks off the menu and bad luck with that particular waitstaff.
