Fried Pies ?

In town for a few days, have done lunch at Gladys and Ron's (fried chicken was good), will be doing Two Urban Licks tonite, hopefully Abattoir tomorrow. However, what are these fried pies ? I grew up on pastys from the U.P., empanadas, pupusas, even cheap Jamaican pies. Who do I need to see to teach me about this 'fried pie' ?

the Varsity is great--casual,legendary fast food--get some there as dessert at drive in--Dwarf house and JCT kitchen have them as well
