Middletown CT closings, openings

Sammy's Pizza on Broad St has closed and reopened (damn quickly too) as a deli.sandwich sorta place. Sammy's will be missed as there is now a large void in good, reasonably priced Italian (Serbian? Croatian? Bosnian?) food in the area. Will be giving the sandwich place a try in a couple of weeks. New to open is a Vietnamese place at 505 Main, the new building that was erected where the old place crumbled and tumbled due to snow and the owner's neglect. There is already a Vietnamese joint across the street diagonally, Pho Mai, more of a Pho shop really, that also happens to serve some other fine dishes besides soup. Should be interesting how it plays out. I have a suspicion it may just be a move for Pho Mai, but cannot confirm just yet

  1. The old steamed burger place near Subway on Main St will be re-opening as "Sabrozo" ....Peru-based cuisine. Just a sign in the window for now

    1. While we're at it, Pho Mai on the river side of Main Street has closed as of a few weeks ago. I heard they lost their lease and are looking for a new spot to open.

Get out! What is that landlord thinking? Pho Mai brought lots of business to that seedy stretch of main st, more than Tibetan Kitchen...Would they rather have derelict store fronts or "urban" clothing stores that close after 6 months?

No eye deer. It's sad, isn't it? :( I just hope they'll find somewhere else to reopen. Maybe in nicer digs, even. I always really liked their food.

      2. It’s Only Natural (ION), a veg/vegan joint is on the move again…from Main St Market, north, to the area near Liberty and Main Streets, in the old hardware store that was a longtime “front” for something. Why they would move back to a nasty neighborhood is a mystery.

A few doors down, Pho Mai, an excellent pho and authentic Vietnamese place, and longtime staple of the area, has closed, it’s building auctioned off.

And talk about “fronts” the newsstand near the produce place is being remodeled into a deli.

Oh, Master Supply, you mean? OK, that's the right-sized space for ION. Why they would move back is because that neighborhood is trying to make a move in the right direction, no? Though from a parking perspective, I'm a bit perplexed. Bet they'll save on their rent/lease as well.

Central News--thought that was the pickle place? It's a proper deli?

          1. re: kattyeyes

I just heard thru the grapevine that ION was not happy with the old landlord, hence the move

Yeah, The Pickle Stand took over Central News by Middlesex Fruitery. Pastrami sandwich--no sir, I didn't like it.

And the Musterdworks food truck (OK, trailer) has moved to the South Green, across from Rite Aid on the little side street near the funeral home and the synagogue...where the "You go, Bob!" truck used to park. :)

Looking forward to getting there again soon while the weather is pleasant.

            2. US Restaurant and Lounge, Main St closed "temporarily" for 30 days...maybe just some kind of infraction, but the place seemed to be circling the drain of late

HA! Agree re circling the drain of late. I had high hopes for them when they first opened, too. Oh, well.

              2. Michael's Deli, Broad St..No more massive cookies, no more chicken pesto sandwich...CLOSED!
