Richmond, Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, Virginia [moved from Southeast board]

I'm heading to Virginia for vacation and was interested in any recommendations for eating in Richmond...Virginia Beach. I have not found much but assume someone has an opinion. We're a family of 5 but we love to eat well. Thanks in advance...

Well I posted my finds on the separate boards so here goes Williamsburg. Had an amazing meal at the Fat Canary and even went there with very low expectations. The hostess Lynn was amazing and made my family and I feel most welcome. We were seated at a wonderful table and received first class service from start to finish, our waiter was spot on with recommendations as well. Started with cocktails but then saw a wine deal from an excellent Italian producer that was too cheap to pass up [guess no one knows Italian wine down here but that was to my benefit]. Would love to give you details about the dishes but truthfully I can't recall unless i saw the menu [oh scallops, ribs, the fish special, steak, lamb... all good and dessert too.]
Also we had lunch at the Cheese Shop [the Fat Canary by day - no, I do not work for them or know the owners lol], 2 days in a row because the sandwiches were all delicious. Our last meal was at Chownings for the 18th C experience and the food was mediocre but the service was great. We stayed for Gambols afterward and it became a highlight of our entire Virginia road trip for my family. OK Gambols ...essentially you play 18th C [drinking] games but even though my 9yr old son could've had a drink if he was alive back then he enjoyed the evening the most while having their in house root beer. The night was so much fun that we bought the games at the gift shop as well as the root beer! Drank and played when we moved on to Virginia Beach.

I'm sorry we missed your post but I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. I'm not sure why you had low expectations for Fat Canary. It has a great reputation.
