Sour Cherries

I've been jonesing for a cherry pie but haven't seen any sour cherries. Checked Berkeley Bowl West this morning, but no dice. Guy said they're not available yet. Seems like the ones that make it down here are from Oregon. Anybody seen any around the East Bay?

Local came and went.

I got some great sour cherries from Washington around this time last year at International Foods in Concord. You might call other Persian markets such as Middle East in Berkeley.

Olson's said that the late rains did a number on the west coast sour cherry crop, so you're not going to see the selection that we had a year ago. Wait 'til next year!

And can somebody explain why one can't buy frozen sour cherries around here? (I've posted about this before and no one has come up with a source for them.)

Did you call any Persian markets? They're still in season in Washington. Might be the tail end. They might have frozen or canned as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, Robert. The Middle East Market on San Pablo just south of University has frozen sour cherries. The guy there says they use them for a rice dish. At $8 a pound that would be a pretty expensive cherry pie, but at least they're pitted.

I'm going to hope some fresh ones show up at Berkeley Bowl, but if not, I'll bite the bullet and make myself an expensive cherry pie.

Saw frozen sour cherries today at Europa Express on Irving at about 16th Ave. $3.99/lb.

Euromix in Oakland has a similar selection and a lot of frozen food, they might have them.
