Hash House (on Decatur/Sahara; NOT the a-go-go place!)

  • 1

People seem to be regularly confusing Hash House on Decatur and Sahara, with Hash House A-Go-Go. This post is mainly about Hash House.

Mary's Hash House, as the name implies, specializes in hash, and they do it well. A large variety of hashes are available, including roast beef, chicken, veggie, turkey, lamb, and of course the usual corned beef, as well as a couple of hash blends. There's also a full complement of standard breakfast items like waffles, pancakes, french toast, etc, plus a Monte Cristo and various lunch items such as salads, sandwiches, and burgers.

Yesterday, I had corned beef hash with extra onions, and homefries (also with onions and peppers). Very well executed and tasty, as usual. I like the hash so much here, I haven't ventured into other items, but based on what I see on other tables, they look fine. If you've ordered toast, the waitress will bring you a tray full of homemade jams and jellies to choose from.

Portions are generous, service is friendly and competent, decor is minimal and a bit dated. I come here for the food. Mary has had her restaurant featured on DDD and United Tastes of America, and has recently competed on "Chopped".

So now I'm going to talk about the a-go-go place, more as a contrast: Hash House A Go Go is a small chain with locations in San Diego, Las Vegas, Chicago, and Reno. If you like fancy, trendy decor and gimmicky vertical food, you might prefer this place. I've gone twice: the first time I had the corned beef hash. You'd think a place with "hash" in their name would at least do that item well. Not in this case. I was there a long time ago so the details are fuzzy, but I remember a large portion of oddly spiced meat, not well-browned. Not hash by my definition. I had their "famous" meatloaf for the second visit and it was pretty average (but also oddly-spiced), and was served with a foot-long sprig of rosemary. Not sure what I was supposed to do with that.

  1. I felt the same, disappointed, way about the corned beef "hash" at hash house a go go. It wasn't hash at all. it was a pile of shredded corned beef accompanied with a pile of potatoes. Deconstructed? whatever. I didn't like it. Their food is very big but not good.
