Where do you dine at least once a month?

Curious about where New Yorkers dine on a regular basis (excluding takeout).

Any neighborhood. Any price.

Thank you.

How can you have more than 30 once a monthers? How long are your months? Or do you eat out more than once a day?

      1. re: JC2

I was just wondering the same. That's a big dining budget!

        1. re: JC2

i eat breakfast lunch and dinner out. Do the math

          1. re: foodwhisperer

I had the same thoughts...that's a long month, and only 4 or 5 o f those serve breakfast. Impressive ground you're covering....and more power to you if you're pulling that off.

my AMEX bills are a killer

              1. re: foodwhisperer

Can you get a Japadog for breakfast? That's what I would do.....put Japadog into heavy rotation.

                1. re: foodwhisperer

You should get a Chase Sapphire preferred - 2X Ultimate Rewards points on dining that can be transferred to a few airlines, including United.

                  1. re: snaporaz

Citi Forward is even better. 5% cashback on restaurants, books (Amazon), etc.

                    1. re: snaporaz

interesting,,, on both the chase sapphire ,, and the city ,,i ve been using amex mostly

I envy how clean your sink must be without any dishes to wash :)

Wow, that leaves you about two or three evenings to try new places, assuming you never dine at home.

                                1. re: Wilfrid

there's 3 meals a day and 7 days a week. Then there's dessert in between or coffee. Kosmose has Minamoto Kitchoan for instance and that's dessert, so is Magnolia 2 other bakeries. In his behalf I eat in as many a month as that too, and eat a few meals at home. But he probably is counting exactly which is every month or maybe its every 5 weeks. I look at my AMEX bill and its amazing that some places some months get 4 or 5 visits. Like Kura last month and Basta Pasta. That aside, I can't believe Kosmose waits on the line at Soba Totto, I could never do that. Also, he is spending too much time up town , Kosmose, you gotta eat more in the WV, LES, and Tribeca haha

It's still an impressive time out of the day to spend three meals eating out, not to mention the appetite to do it. There are food writers who eat out less than that, and none are that routine. It's a fascinating lifestyle.

                                    1. re: sugartoof

today is only a 2 meal day, one cheap meal and one very expensive one. How many meals do you eat a day?

Many New Yorkers don't cook at all and also have expense accounts for fine dining.

That said, kosmose and others do have impressive lists,

I don't know if New York has much in the way of serious Mexican food [barring Empellón... which is rather a special case, like nouvelle Mexican cuisine], at least on Manahttan. Taquerías have certainly sprouted all over the place.

There are some very popular falafel joints [eg Taïm], but I presume most of their business is takeaway. If I lived near Gazala Palace or the [old, pre-Bourdain] Kabab Café in Astoria, I'd probably visit them at least once a month.

I probably get Mexican from Noche Mexicana on 101st/Amsterdam once a week. It's very good, very traditional, and cheap---but I didn't count it 'cause I mostly use it for take-out.

Middle Eastern, yeah, it's popular. If I still lived on the Upper West Side, Jerusalem Restaurant would be on this list. I don't like the St Marks location of Mamoun's enough to go there once a month - it's fine, and I'm glad it's here, but I don't go that often.

The "thai me up" and tempeh ruben are favorites and i often get the pumpkin seed brittle to go. The dragon bowls can be blah if you dont make a good combo.

Unfortunately Azuri is still the best but doesn't come close to falafel you get downtown. Gazala's place makes a decent one as well and much much better hummus. Here's a list of my monthlys (for the most part)

Nothing had much flavor, not even the hummus. Okay, the tahini helped, but not much. They're generous with the falafel, and they have great crunch, so it's a great deal, but frankly, it reminds me of Chickpea, only dulled. I want to like the place though.

I strongly disagree with Sugartoof, as far as the flavor goes. The falafel is quite tasty, and they have variations of it. The pita is freshly baked, the hummus is the best in the city for sure. Chickpea doesn't compare at all to Nish Nush. Ba'Al is another downtown place with good falafel.
