Lobster glut

  • 5

I see in the NY Times that Maine lobster prices are half the normal due to overabundance. Any fish market/restaurant in LA currently passing the savings along?

  1. The story I read said not to expect any unusually low prices outside of Maine proper (and that a lot of the lobster men weren't even taking their boats out in any case).

However, the half-price at Chaya is still quite high (unless the server misquoted or I misheard, the regular price they quoted was $70 for a 2lber so the "deal" was now $35--not really that good a deal). One would be much better off at the Palm, especially with its Summer lobster special [$99 for a 4lber, 2 starters and 2 sides].

      2. I'm not sure exactly what you consider to be good savings, but there is one of these fast casual fish grill places in Torrance called FishBonz (near the AMC Movie Theater) that is offering 20 lobster tail dinners every Sunday for $20. It's an 8 ounce grilled tail with garlic butter or cajun spice (I suppose you can ask for it plain), rice or fries, and cole slaw. The counter person told me they sell out early in the evenings.

I had it last night. I thought it tasted good. The size of the lobster tail was passable (not like those "lobster tails" the size of a pinky at a place like Black Angus when they serve lobster specials).
