Dynasty vs. Kirin for Dim Sum? Worth the trip out of Richmond?

My parents are wanting to go for an excellent dim sum experience, and we'll be staying at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Richmond.

I know there are a plethora of dim sum places in Richmond, but I've heard a lot about these two places (I was pretty swayed by grayelf's post on Dynasty).

Or should I just stick close to Richmond, and go to somewhere like Sun Sui Wah, Jade Seafood, Vivacity or Sea Harbour? Or do I go for big at Fishermen's Terrace?

What about the Kirin in Richmond - is it a reasonable facsimile?

Double points if they serve it at 9:00 AM! My parents have a 1:00 PM flight to catch on Wednesday! Or maybe a Chinese breakfast!

And I don't even want to bring up XLB!

  1. Hmmm....well Vivacity serves dimsum starting at 8:30 or 9am and is pretty good. Enough time to make the flight.

That sounds good! Have to do one of the other places on Monday or Tuesday.

FWIW there was a honkin' great line at Red Star in President's Plaza this morning when we went to the food court for shiao bing, sticky rice roll, crepe and sweet tofu (mmm, breaky!) at 10:15. I feel like that's where I'd go for my next Richmond dim sum. I have had several okay to meh dim sums at Jade, and Fisherman's Terrace drives me crazy with the waits even when you have resos, the weird layout and the racket at peak times. I also think they don't excel at much, maybe the deep fried stuff. SSW in Rmd, I can't comment as I've only been to the East Van one which is now meh. Also haven't made it to Vivacity yet though I've heard good things. For your purposes, I'm thinking it might be a good choice. Just promise me you won't order XLB at any of the places you've listed as they are all Cantonese and won't do them justice. Ya gotta hit a Shanghainese place for that, which you could easily do Mon or Tues. I love Shanghainese dim sum!

          Thanks for the deep dive!

Went to the Summer Night Market for some fun shopping and snacking. My parents love that kind of stuff! Did the requisite Hurricane Potatoes. One of my favourites was the Mango & Jelly Shaved Ice from Yummy Mango.

Will let you know which dim sum place I make it to, Shanghainese or Cantonese!

Sea harbour and Fishermans Terrace are my two favourites. You can't go wrong with either of those.

quddous, have you been to Sea Harbour since it moved? I read a couple of reports of issues with service and running out of items at the new location.
