Bangkok and Chiang Mai: Vegetarian

Any pointers or tips for a vegetarian? I am looking for upscale restaurants, food stalls/markets, street-food, and hole in the wall. Really anything that is good and should not be missed. Big thing they need to be vegetarian/vegan friendly. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

  1. Good luck. I have thought about it (when talking to my veggie fans in North America), even went tried to figure out how to make vegetarian curry paste (for a friend) - but it just was not the same (curry paste has shrimp paste in it). I think it will be a very difficult task.

Actually, there are quite a few vegetarians in Thailand and many eateries catering to them.

Although I am not vegetarian, one of my favorite spots was a veggie stall at United Center Silom's 3rd floor food court. Haven't been since the place has been remodeled, but the stall was the second or third in from the elevators.

This place has been getting some local press:

I saw a clip on TV and the food looked mighty good.

When looking for vegetarian, around Thailand, look for this signage:

This will indicate that the cart, stall or shop is veggie. The 2 Thai characters, to the left of the Chinese character is "Jay" Thai for vegetarian.

I did not know that. I will have to save that sign for future reference. Don't think I would ever become a vegetarian since I like having meat in my dish -- although unlike in the west where the meat proportions are much greater than dietary recommendations -- here it is more proportional.

I'm a confirm omnivore. In the past, in the States, I found almost all vegetarian eateries my friends would rave over left me hungry.

However, places like the food court stall I mentioned, completely satisfy my hunger. Some of the dished one would swear are meat!

the same Khun Churn mentioned above does a vegetarian buffet with a big selection at lunchtime (11:00am-2:00pm) at their Chiang Mai location on Nimmanhaemin Soi 17. Some people love it, some don't think it's that great. It's a very nice location and I go occasionally but I'm not a vegetarian so I'll refrain from commenting on the food itself.

If you do try Khun Churns, Sukhumvit, they are now offering 20% off on Thursdays, through September.
